Cockpit USA is proud to offer a limited edition re-issue of the original USAF A-2 flight jacket introduced as official uniform wear, reintroduced by the United States Air Force in 1987. It has been over 22 years since the U.S. Air Force reintroduced as standard issue, the leather A-2 flyer’s jacket as regulation uniform wear for air crews. The Air Force last contracted to make the item at the end of 1943, In 1986 Jeff Clyman President of Cockpit USA was personally involved working with the Air Force Uniform Board at the Pentagon and the Product Development Group at Wright Patterson Airbase on specifications so that the new A-2 jacket was compatible with modern day air crew needs. As a special limited edition, Cockpit USA, Inc. is offering the re-issue of its style Z2107G A-2, the jacket that gave new life to the Air Force A-2. The 1987 issue Air Force A-2 jacket saw action in Panama, the Balkans, Desert Storm and Desert Shield and in other air operations that the U.S. Air Force has participated in until the end of the 20th century. Although the pattern for the Air Force leather jacket was changed in 2000 there are many of our customers who have requested that we re-issue the goatskin A-2 leather jacket that we provided for the U.S. Air Force in the first contract since 1943 which the Air Force issued to us in 1987. We accepted the challenge. The 1987 re-issue followed closely the World War II specifications of the A-2 jacket and is slimmer fitting than its “new and improved brother”. The 1987 version features a soft but durable goatskin shell, hand cut from at least five choice chrome tanned hides.

Original features included are snap down collar with the original hook and eye neck closure, top entry pockets with snap close flap, knit cuffs and waistband. This jacket does not have side entry pockets nor the inside pen pocket or the underarm gusset of our style Z21V41 the current issue version which we currently manufacture under contract to the U.S. Department of Defense.

These jackets are true to size so if you want to be among those select few who can become owners of the authentic first re-issue of the 1987 A-2 flight jacket and desire a roomier fit, you should order one size larger. Our reissue comes with its limited edition ID tag.
