First introduced in 1944 on the beaches of Normandy, the M-43 field jacket was a second skin to the brave GI’s of the Allied American Armies. The Cockpit Omaha Beach M-43 presents the jacket in its simplest form. Reproduced according to the style of the 1940s original, this jacket features a soft cotton military specified label. These desert tan jackets used in Sicily were modified with a small gusset behind the shoulder for freedom of movement but this feature was dispensed in all later olive green production.

I went with the recommended size of M and it fits like an expensive custom fit shirt on my skinny 5’8” 158 lbs frame. My normal dress shirt arm length is 32. The sleeves on this coat are about 2.5 inches longer than I wear.
So on this cold morning I decided to take it for its first spin. It was cold outside and I chose the M43 over the M65. I was wearing a long sleeve t-shirt and after putting on the M43 I knew it was no enough for the cold. So I did what I normally do when I wear the M65. I threw on a heavy duty thick Wrangler shirt and there was no way I could go like that. Way too tight and nearly caused a panic getting out of it!
So I decided to go with just a light flannel long sleeve. Almost the same thing. Tight and the sleeves were left somewhere near my elbow. So I decided ok, just the long sleeve t-shirt. This is not a cold day wear jacket. It is very lightweight and too much is exposed to the cold because the location of the top button is too far down. Furthermore there is not much room to wear additional clothes like in a normal jacket. The sleeves on the coat are narrow and have as much room as a young boy’s coat. My skinny arms feel like they are in a tight tube.
I don’t see how a GI would have kept warm in this jacket. I spend 3 winters in Germany in my M65 and wearing thermals and a liner and it was cold.
The only good thing is that I got it on a special with an additional discount at XMAS. And if not for the fact that I had put my name on the inside of the inside pocket I would send it back.
