There are not many planes more “BADASS” than the Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, also known as the “Warthog”. The A-10’s story began in Vietnam, warfare over the jungles of Vietnam posed a problem for the existing set of F-105 Thunderchiefs and F-4 Phantoms, which were not as effective at close air support missions. Much simpler and older propeller driven aircraft like the A-1 Skyraider and Army helicopters were more preferable and could maneuver at low altitudes and had the range to help infantry operations with air support. By 1972, the Pentagon had developed a single-seat, twin turbofan engine, straight-wing jet aircraft designed solely for close air support (CAS) of friendly ground troops, attacking armored vehicles and tanks, and providing quick-action support, enter the A-10 Thunderbolt II.
