Brought into service around 1934 and a firm favorite among bomber crews during WWII, the sturdy B-3 bomber jacket was originally designed for both open cockpit and high altitude flying in the 1930s. Crafted with a nappa leather finished exterior developed by Jeff Clyman in the late 1970’s, based on the lost technique used on the originals issued in WWII. In 1978 Cockpit USA added side entry hand warmer pockets updating the jacket to contemporary standards. The Genuine B-3 Bomber Jacket is built for facing the cold without fear. 1. My dream jacket! Review by Tommy

This is something I was chasing for a very, very long time, even while living in Florida for years. I never quite pulled the trigger on a real shearling, though, obviously because the Florida heat made such a purchase questionable at best. But believe it or not, an even bigger reason is that I am the fussiest person on the planet when it comes to how my clothes fit. I didn't just want a shearling, I wanted a shearling that looked like it was made especially for me.

Fortunately, I left our nation's swamp and moved up to more civilized climates. But now I needed a real winter coat. Ah, shearling time! But it still had to fit!

Enter Cockpit USA, and their unbelievably patient and accommodating staff. I can't thank them enough for allowing me to come by the showroom and try on every single shearling they sell, in several different sizes. Finding the right fit wasn't an issue, though...having to choose which one of the many amazing jackets was! After agonizing over the choice between an RAF and the Genuine B-3, I finally went with the B-3. No better place to start than with the classic, right?

Now, how does it hold up? Incredibly. You will not be cold in one of these. Rain doesn't seem to trouble it. knock it around, scrape it against stuff accidentally, and it just ends up looking even cooler.

This is a jacket with stories to tell, and I want to hear them all.

Sizing: I like my clothes to fit me stylishly. I cannot stand loose fitting jackets. I am 5'11", about 175 to 180lbs, and like a snug fit. For me, size 34 was absolutely perfect. Tight enough to wear it with just a t-shirt underneath, or a sweater if it is really brutal outside and I want to get real snuggly and insulated. If you prefer a looser fit and like to layer, and you are about my size, a 36 would probably do it for you. (Posted on 2/8/2016)

  2. Look forward to finally having a great looking winter jacket! Review by Phil

As someone who lives in NYC, winter months limit me to enormous coats the err on the side of function over form. I have yet to wear this in appropriately cold weather, but really looking forward to finally having the chance to have both!

This jacket is a military fit, so you'll likely have to size down by a lot. I'm a 40/42 with affordable European brands (e.g. Zara) but this jacket was a perfect fit at size 36! 38 for some of the other sheepskin jackets.

The finish on these will vary so use the images on the site as a solid reference, though they don't do the real thing justice. No pleather here!

This goes out to those who live in NYC or those who are traveling to NYC - but go to the store, and figure out your size. The good people behind Cockpit USA are extremely helpful and accommodating. Email/Call ahead with styles and size, and enjoy the showroom full of items for sale, and for show. (Posted on 9/29/2014)
