Joseph S. Hydrusko was a 22 year old Navy seaman, helping to paint the U.S.S. Solace, a hospital ship on which he worked aboard on that fateful day when Japanese forces began their attacks on Pearl Harbor in 1941. On this same day, twenty nine years later, this Long Island resident flew over the Statue of Liberty in a 1929 Curtiss Robin, dropping a single rose for every year that has passed since that day in tribute to the more than 2,400 Americans who died in the battle. Now an annual tradition, this year’s Dropping of the Roses will be included in the memorial service being planned for the Cockpit USA sponsored American Airpower Museum by the Air Force Association. Be sure to mark this date down in your diary – it is definitely not to be missed.
