Stories of the Jacket: The M-43 Field Jacket

The M-43 field jacket is first and foremost a true piece of historical battle attire. First introduced in 1944 on the beaches of Normandy, right up until the end of the war in 1945, this jacket was a second skin to the brave GI’s of the Allied American Armies. Continuing its reign and colorful history, the M-43 was worn by both air forces and infantry during the occupation of post WWII Europe as well as in combat in the hills of Korea during the 1950s. Designed to suit servicemen’s needs for a well-fitted, warm jacket with the potential for added optional extras such as a hood and liner system, this field jacket provided it all. We at Cockpit USA are such fans of the jacket we produced a version, the Omaha Beach M-43 in its simplest form. Reproduced according to the slimmer fitting style of the 1940s original, this jacket is crafted from high-count 100% dense cotton poplin and boasts interior pockets and a soft cotton military specified label along with the contemporary addition of a bi-swing gusset behind the arm for ease and comfort of movement. For an added authentic touch, we even gave the jacket the Cockpit USA signature broken in look treatment, making it as close a model as possible of the original. Grab yours today!

The entire world breathed a sigh of relief when Hitler and his blood stained dictatorship was defeated. Brought to its end by the proud, combined efforts of the USA, Great Britain, the Soviet Union and many other forces along with the unending bravery of their armies and citizens, it was a victory for the future when Nazi Germany and its allies were brought to a stop. However, also in play were Hitler’s own error riddled and bungled operations, from his confusing chain of command arrangement to his paranoia and ego driven leadership, these aspects all played significant roles in unraveling his radical plans to change the world order. Movie Monday: The Dirty Dozen

Based on a novel of the same name by E.M. Nathanson, The Dirty Dozen is a 1967  film based on what was once thought a real group called ‘The Filthy Thirteen’. Directed by Robert Aldrich of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? fame, this  pre D-Day WWII movie tells a captivating story of twelve convicts recruited specifically for a top secret mission. With the promise of their sentences being commuted, the long serving felons agree to take part in a pre-invasion mission to infiltrate and attack a meeting of dozens of high rankingNazi officers in order to reduce German response to D-Day. Filmed entirely in England and starring Ernest Borgnine, Charles Bronson, Lee Marvin, Jim Brown and John Cassavetes, the film was received by critics as both bold and gruesome, and considered controversial in its very explicit depiction of the horrors of war. While it may not be a lighthearted watch, The Dirty Dozen is certainly a Cockpit USA classic not to be missed.

History.com: D-Day Deception

This short documentary courtesy of History.com looks in greater depths at the trickery the Allied forces undertook in order to confuse the German military during D-Day. With commentary from experts including Bevin Alexander, the author of How Wars Are Won and Richard A. Gabriel of the Department of War Studies and footage of the fake army paraphernalia used to deceive the Nazi’s, this video analysing “Operation Fortitude” is sure to make your jaw drop! It certainly made ours hit the ground!

Movie Monday: Back to Bataan

Set in Luzon in the Philippines, Back to Bataan is a WWII movie based on true events that took place in the aftermath of the Battle of Bataan between 1941 and 1942. Directed by Edward Dmytryk and starring Hollywood royalty John Wayne, Anthony Quinn and Fely Franquelli, this 1945 movie is a dramatic concoction of real and fictional tales including resistance battle, guerrilla fighting and POW rescue missions along with spies, propaganda and apparent treason creating a mile a minute movie set to keep you on the edge of your seat!
